Edna J. Weeks

Edna Jane Weeks, the daughter of Harrison William and Myrtle Vance Schamel, was born January 18, 1928 at her parents’ home in Lohrville, Iowa, and died May 24, 2012 at the St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll, Iowa at the age of 84 years, 4 months, and 6 days. Edna attended school in Lohrville through the 9th grade. She then worked at the local 5 & 10 store, where she sold some of her needlework. Edna also worked as a nanny for a local resident. Edna planned to further her education for a career in interior design, until she met Richard. On August 21, 1946, Edna was united in marriage to Richard Earl Weeks at the Catholic Church in Lohrville, where she was baptized. Six children: Janice, Thomas, Frances, Johnathan, William and James were born to this union. They first lived in Coon Rapids, Iowa where they cared for her Uncle Jake. Later they moved to the Viola area where they farmed and raised their family. Edna was a homemaker who loved to sew and bake, she served as a 4-H leader for many years and was a member of the neighborhood ladies’ group. Richard and Edna moved to Audubon in 1968. Edna was a seamstress and also painted and wallpapered many homes in Audubon. She started work at the Ben Franklin Store in 1969. For a short time she worked at Marv’s Grocery Store and at the Audubon Public Library where she loved reading to the young people. Later she was employed at the Audubon Congregate Meals as a cook and then the Audubon Food Pride Deli. Edna was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Audubon and the Catholic Women’s Group. She was a past member of the Audubon County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and enjoyed making ornaments for their Christmas tree. She loved to crochet the infant caps for the new-borns there. Edna and Richard enjoyed getting together with their friends to play pitch, pinochle, bingo and going on tour bus rides to casinos and Branson. They also enjoyed nature, fishing, gardening, growing flowers and watching the birds and squirrels. Edna loved to sew, crochet, talk politics, and to watch sports - such as Iowa and Iowa State basketball and football, and she especially liked Tiger Woods, More recently she enjoyed Nascar races to watch Dale Earnhardt, Jr. Above everything else, her favorite thing was spending time with all of her children. Preceding her in death were her husband Richard Earl Weeks; her parents; her sister Lois Garrett; her half-sister Buela Weishum; her brothers: Donnie Schamel and Frank Schamel; her half-brother Robert Schamel; her sisters-in-law and brothers -in-law: Edra Broich, Carole Weeks, Donna Weeks, Maurice Hoffman, Henry Rossmanith, Lloyd Garrett, Harold Weeks, Ronald Weeks and Maurice Weeks; and her mother-in-law and father-in-law Susan (Gerber) and Earl Weeks Survivors include her six children: Janice Staiert and husband Ronald of Walnut, Iowa, Thomas Weeks and wife KJ of Las Vegas, Nevada, Frances Huffman and husband Terry of Audubon, Iowa, Johnathan Weeks and wife Sharen of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, William Weeks and wife Laurayne of Orlando, Florida, and James Weeks and wife Kim of Omaha, Nebraska; 17 grandchildren and step-grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren; her brother: Danny Schamel and wife Kathryn of Lohrville, Iowa; her sister Ila Rossmanith of Lake City, Iowa; her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Bonnie Schamel of Williams, Iowa, Linda Schamel of Yucca Valley, California, Twilla Hoffman of Carroll, Iowa, Cleo Weeks and wife Shirley of Des Moines, Iowa, Dale Weeks and wife Roberta of Seymour, Iowa, Phyllis Weeks of Ankeny, Iowa and Robert Broich of Carroll; nieces, nephews; great nieces and great nephews; and great-great nieces and great-great nephews, other relatives and friends.

Cemetery:
Interment will be in St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery in Audubon.

Visitation:
The family will meet with friends on Wednesday evening at 6:00 with a Rosary at 7:00 at Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon.

Service:
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Emmanuel Agwuoke on Thursday, May 31, 2012, at 10:30 A.M. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Audubon.
