Frank August Obermeier, the son of Frank Xavier and Catherine Marie (Bahlman) Obermeier was born October 22, 1927, at his parents’ home near Gray, Iowa and died November 26, 2018, at his home in Audubon, Iowa at the age of 91 years, 1 month, and 4 days.
Frank was baptized and confirmed at the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Audubon. He attended Sacred Heart Catholic School in Templeton, Iowa for a short time before attending rural school in Melville Township near Audubon, Iowa through the 8th grade. He then helped his father operate the family farm along with being a farm hand for several area farmers. On December 1, 1950, he was inducted into the United States Army. During his tour of duty he was stationed in Germany before being honorably discharged on November 19, 1952, and returned to Audubon.
On November 24, 1956, he was united in marriage to Betty Deist at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon. Four children, Pam, Paul, Peggy, and Patrick were born to this union and he also welcomed Dennis Deist to the family. Frank continued to farm where he grew row crops and raised livestock while working a fulltime job. He was employed for McCorkel Construction, Emmert Manufacturing and TCI in Audubon until it closed. He was then employed at the Audubon Golf and Country Club as a groundskeeper for several years before transferring to the Greenbrier Golf Course for 7 years and eventually making his way back to the Audubon Golf Course. In 1985, they moved into Audubon and he continued to farm until he retired from farming in 1992. He continued working for the golf course until he was forced to retire in 2015 due to his failing health.
Frank was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon. He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W., Dale Christensen Post #4119 in Audubon and a member of the American Legion Post #120 in Audubon. Frank and Betty always enjoyed their annual bus trip to Branson, Missouri with their friends for over 20 years. But most of all he loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Preceding him in death was his son Paul Obermeier; his parents; his sister Jeanette and husband Delmus Schrum; his brothers: Don Obermeier, LeRoy Obermeier, and LaVern Obermeier; and his brother-in-law Harry Williamson.
Survivors include his wife Betty Obermeier of Audubon, Iowa; his children: Pam and husband Quinn Kelly of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Peggy Obermeier and special friend Stan Weihs both of Audubon, Patrick “Pat” and wife Bridget Obermeier of Audubon; his step-son Dennis and wife Jodi Deist of Audubon; his grandchildren: Diana Kelly of Council Bluffs, Kris and wife Ashley Obermeier of Audubon, Brooke and husband Brian Klocke of Audubon, Brittni and husband Cody Williams of Audubon, Kyra Obermeier and special friend Jake Williams both of Audubon, Sydney Obermeier of Audubon; his step grandchildren: Derek and wife Genelle Deist of Audubon, Jackie Karns of Audubon; his great grandchildren: Dylan, Alexis, Karter and Madison Obermeier, Ryker and Bennett Williams, Jackson, Eli and Oliver Deist, Grayson and Gable Karns; his sister Darlene Williamson of Audubon; his sisters-in-law and brother-in-law: Bev Obermeier of Audubon, Jean Obermeier of Council Bluffs, Rosalie Obermeier of Marne, Iowa, Bessie and husband Bernie Owen of Audubon; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The family will meet with friends Thursday, November 29, 2018, from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon, Iowa. Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Ben Unseth on Friday, November 30, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon, Iowa. Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon. The honorary casket bearers will be: Brittni Williams, Kyra Obermeier, Sydney Obermeier, Ashley Obermeier, Brooke Klocke, Diana Kelly, Jackie Karns and Genelle Deist. The casket bearers will be: Kris Obermeier, Cody Williams, Jake Williams, Derek Deist, Brian Klocke, Dylan Obermeier and Stan Weihs.
